Summer 2010 : Design School

stack up

Reed McIlvaine of New York City’s Renny & Reed shares an easy, chic centerpiece.

I chose this design because the look is interesting and different yet very simple for people at home to achieve with any combination of seasonal flowers. It also works as a centerpiece that showcases beautiful, seasonal flowers and soft neutral colors and will fit in a variety of settings. Casual or formal, for a luncheon or dinner party—the stacking of the vases adds just the right amount of height that’s still comfortable for a seating table.

  1. First off, soak the block of Oasis floral foam, submerging it in a bucket of water. (Don’t push the block under the water, as this will cause air bubbles to form in the center of the block.) Once the block is fully soaked, cut a piece to fit snugly into one of your cube vases, making the top of the Oasis flush with the top of the vase. Set this aside for now.
  2. Next, make individual hand-tied bouquets of all one flower with the hydrangeas, roses, and delphiniums and tie with raffia to keep the shape.
  3. Then, cut the stems to fit into the vases. The flowers should stick out from the top of their vase about three to four inches.
