Buzz :: Birmingham Launch Party
Birmingham saw the first bloom of flower magazine After months of anticipation and "buzz," the premiere issue of flower made its long-awaited debut at the Birmingham Museum of Art in March amidst a backdrop of pinks and greens. The Museum’s modern white color scheme provided the perfect foil for the breath-taking array of floral hues. Guests were surrounded by the colorful creations of area florists including Dorothy McDaniel, Ray Jordan of Flower Buds, Dykes Culp of Red Mountain Design, Carole Sullivan of Lagniappe Designs, Sybil Sylvester of Wildflower Designs, John Martinez of Bloom, Jon Davis of Avid, Kathy Miller of Winmill Designs, and Leah Hazzard of Lush Life. Each designer’s creation showcased the great design talent that resides in Birmingham. Caterer Kathy G.’s unique fare was a work of art itself. Creamy goat cheese truffle lollipops gave guests a taste of something different, while the made-to-order Thai noodle bar and individual key lime pies served in shot glasses met with rave reviews. Delicate flowers molded from vanilla ice cream vanished from serving trays as did the gourmet mini BLTS. In a delightful twist, each of the specialty-created "flower-tinis" contained a shapely orchid bloom. Local jazz master Eric Essix and his band provided the music for the more than 300 people in attendance, including Mary Evelyn McKee, a close friend of Margot’s who introduced the editor-in-chief with a moving and personal speech. Margot thanked the crowd for their continued support of her dream and beamed as the fruit of her labors was finally unveiled. Fittingly, flowers were everywhere, even down to the smallest detail, including nametags made to look like flowers and leaves. At the end of the night, party guests got to take their pick of a gorgeous assortment of flowers donated by Miami’s Flower Transfer to take home, along with canvas gift bags filled with a flower t-shirt, handmade flower pen, and of course, the premiere issue of the magazine. All in attendance attested to what a wonderful night it was.
